Shelter Veterinarian
The Animal Rescue League of Boston is currently offering a full time position working with our Shelter and Community Veterinary Medicine Program. This position will spend time at our Brewster Animal Care and Adoption Center (Cape Cod) working as a Shelter Veterinarian with a rotation on our Spay Waggin’ mobile unit, traveling across Southeastern Massachusetts and Cape Cod to provide low cost, HVHQ spay/neuter services.
This position will provide exceptional veterinary care for the animals at the League’s Animal Care and Adoption Center in Brewster, MA (Cape Cod) with shelter animals in preventive medical activities, dealing with a variety of animal species in a multitude of the circumstances including: early diagnosis and prompt treatment of conditions of animals in the animal shelter; prevention or protection from disease; the relief of animal suffering and the rehabilitation of animals with treatable conditions. In addition, the successful candidate will be an experienced, high volume, high quality spay/neuter surgeon with excellent medical skills required. This role may be required to spend time on environmental health and zoonotic disease programs, teaching, public speaking, wildlife programs and law enforcement cases. Qualified candidates will have a valid and currentMassachusettslicense to practice veterinary medicine. A minimum of two years experience in the practice of Veterinary medicine required, experience with shelter medicine and Humane Alliance training preferred. This Veterinarian must be motivated and self directed with excellent interpersonal skills to promote animal health and awareness.

Advancement Coordinator
The Animal Rescue League of Boston is seeking an exceptional Advancement Coordinator to join our team! This full time, 40 hours per week position will assist in a variety of fundraising functions, with primary responsibilities for receiving and processing incoming gifts, issuing acknowledgement letters, gathering data, reconciling income, and acting as the main customer service representative for the department. BREWSTER BRANCH: Animal Behavior Counselor
Responsible to: Center for Shelter Dogs Research Director, Brewster Shelter Manager (on-site supervisor)
Summary: Hourly position (up to 18 hours per week) with the Center for Shelter Dogs (CSD), based in the Brewster Animal Care & Adoption Center of the Animal Rescue League of Boston. Functions as a key contributor to the Animal Rescue League of Boston and the Center for Shelter Dogs in the area of canine behavior. Works closely with the Research Director and Shelter Manager to advise and educate League staff members and the public on issues of canine behavior as they affect shelter dogs before and after adoption.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- *Must complete a six-month orientation and training period. The regular workweek is up to eighteen (18) hours. Utilizes time management effectively.
- * Must maintain a good attendance record. Must present a neat, clean and professional appearance.
- * Must be able to handle a wide variety of animals in a multitude of environmental circumstances effectively and humanely. Must be able to effectively communicate the policies and beliefs of the League and the Center for Shelter Dogs.
- Perform behavior evaluations of shelter dogs. Teach staff to assist in the evaluation process. Work closely with the staff of the Centerof Shelter Dogsto ensure consistency and adherence to CSD research protocols.
- Attend weekly behavioral meetings with managers/supervisors to discuss behavioral rehabilitation and placement requirements. Attend other shelter and CSD meetings as needed.
- Design and implement behavioral rehabilitation programs. Teach staff and volunteers to aid in the implementation of programs.
- Conduct behavioral pre-adoption appointments with adopters for animals with special needs. Follow-up with adopters to ensure success.
- Conduct private obedience training appointments with adopters as needed.
- Assist in answering telephone calls which come through the behavior helpline.
- Help design and teach shelter dog obedience classes as needed. Teach staff and volunteers to obedience train shelter dogs.
- Assist in the teaching of volunteer orientations on dog walking and obedience training.
- Assist in the implementation of research studies.
- *Maintain awareness of new products related to dog training and behavioral therapy
Qualifications:
- Must be at least a Certified Pet Dog Trainer (CPDT). A Licensed Animal Behavior Veterinary Technician or an Associate Certified Applied Animal Behaviorist is highly favorable. Must adhere to the AHA/Delta Humane Dog Training Guidelines.
- Must have minimum education of an associate degree, preferably in ethology, biology, zoology, psychology or veterinary technology.
- Must have at least two years dog training experience and one-year shelter experience.

Qualifications:
- Must have a current and valid Massachusetts Driver’s License and be insurable with the ARL of Boston’s insurance policy for driving a League vehicle.

CENTER FOR SHELTER DOGS: Match-Up II Program Supervisor (part-time)
Responsible to: Research Director of theCenter for Shelter Dogs
Summary: This is a part-time 20 hours per week position in the Center for Shelter Dogs (CSD), which addresses a wide variety of issues related to improving the placement and welfare of un-owned dogs in animal shelters, animal control facilities, and other rescue situations. The person in this position will play a key role in the development, training, and management of CSD’s behavior evaluation program for shelter dogs, the Match-Up II Shelter Dog Rehoming Program (MUII). This person will regularly conduct shelter dog evaluations using the Match-Up II program, teach others how to conduct evaluations through webinars, lectures, and hands-on training, and provide support to users of the program. The person in this position will also learn and support CSD’s programs for behavior modification and enrichment. In addition, this person will also provide assistance with research projects and generating web site and marketing content related to CSD’s programs for shelter dogs. Proficient knowledge of and practical skills with animal shelters, canine behavior, and canine behavior problems are essential. Superior organization skills are required. There will be significant interaction with League and external shelter staff and volunteers. Some travel required.
Duties and responsibilities:
- Must complete a ninety day orientation and training period. The regular work week is twenty (20) hours. Must manage time effectively.
- Become a certified MUII evaluator and maintain proficiency by regularly conducting shelter dog behavioral evaluations at the League and elsewhere as needed.
- Working closely with Center Director and CSD’s Education & Events Manager, assist with and independently conduct MUII training events, including webinars, lectures and hands-on training. As an expert on the entire MUII program, train groups or individuals on how to conduct the behavior evaluation, demonstrating a high degree of proficiency and standardization, how to complete other parts of the MUII program, both on paper and on MUII Online, the accompanying portal web site. Expert at the portal web site, teaching users how to use and complete the program on the portal, helping them find resources, and answering questions about the portal.
- Manage and respond to inquiries to help desk email inboxes for MUII Online; manage and respond to telephone help requests related to MUII.
- Manage the day to day operations of the MUII Online portal, including tracking portal usage, administering portal accounts and users, and answering portal inquiries.
- Assist Center Director to support MUII users as well as to expand the awareness and use of MUII.
- Assist Center Director to manage, develop, and refine the MUII program including collecting feedback from users and prospects, determining necessary revisions to add new features and/or changes to improve program performance and usability, conducting training about revisions, and monitoring impact of any revisions.
- Assist Center Program Director and Asst Dir Marketing/Communications to determine portal revisions and enhancements, testing and roll-out of those revisions, training and support of users during roll-out, and monitoring impact of any revisions.
- Videotape, photograph, and manage library of behavior evaluations.
10. Be familiar and able to teach about CSD’s other programs for shelter dogs, especially CSD behavior programs (behavior modification training, enrichment). Work closely with behavior programs Behaviorist and Behavioral Programs Supervisor to support their work developing, testing, and implementing CSD’s behavior programs and help shelters and rescues see the connection between the needs identified by MUII and the behavior programs available to address those needs.
- Write content about MUII and shelter dogs for CSD’s marketing activities including blogs and social media outlets such as Facebook and Twitter.
- The above covers the most significant responsibilities of the position. It does not, however, exclude other occasional duties, the inclusion of which would be in conformity with the level of the position.
Qualifications:
- BA/BS and CPDT or equivalent required.
- Must have at least 2 years dog training experience, more than 4 preferred. Prefer at least 2 years shelter experience.
- Must possess proficient knowledge of canine behavior, learning theory and welfare.
- Must possess a high level of professionalism and strong interpersonal skills as will work with diverse group of people, from CSD staff to League shelter staff and volunteers to staff and volunteers at other sheltering organizations.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills with a strong interest in teaching and helping people learn, able to create a stimulating and energizing learning environment.
- Must be proficient with computers, MS Office, and web sites, with an interest in teaching on the computer.
- Must have a high level of organization and attention to detail. Especially important when conducting and training on the MUII Behavior Evaluation as a high degree of standardization and consistency is required every time.
- Must be willing to travel to partner sites, training events, conferences, and meetings as necessary.
