Veterinary Forensics at the Animal Rescue League of Boston

The Veterinary Forensics program at the Animal Rescue League of Boston is dedicated to documenting animal abuse, conducting crime scene investigations and collecting physical evidence. Our efforts are focused on providing crucial scientific evidence and expert testimony in a court of law.

The veterinary forensics program also works in conjunction with the League’s Center for Animal Protection in investigating and prosecuting animal cruelty cases throughout the Commonwealth.  Led by Dr. Martha Smith-Blackmore and in close conjunction with Lt. Alan Borgal, our forensics work seeks to determine the causes, extent and duration of animals’ pain and suffering to bring those responsible to justice.

Dr. Martha Smith-Blackmore serves as director of Veterinary Medical Services and is currently acting as the League’s interim president.  She is a founding board member of the International Veterinary Forensics Sciences Association (IVFSA) and teaches a veterinary forensics course at the Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine at TuftsUniversity.
